At Rawson Custom Woodworks, LLC we love connecting with fellow woodworking enthusiasts. So for all of you passionate woodworkers, here is some of our advice on one of the most challenging aspects of woodworking: selecting a project.
Yes, out of all of the techniques to learn, picking a project can be one of the most difficult things to master when it comes to woodworking.
The number one thing to consider when selecting a project is to consider what tools you have in your shop.
This may seem like information you would obviously already have, but many times you will start a project only to realize you don't have the right tools to finish. Of course, when this happens, it can be the perfect opportunity to get that tool you’ve always wanted, but other times, you may not be able to afford that new tool you need.
Growing a shop is a gradual process. You add one tool at a time. This process takes great patience, so it can be disheartening to start a project and not be able to finish it because you can’t get that needed tool yet.
So be realistic about what you can accomplish with the tools you have. No matter what project you complete, you will be gaining experience. Even if it is a small project like a birdhouse or letter organizer, you will gain more and more experience with each new project you build. So don't worry if you can't make that grandfather clock or kitchen hutch right now.
Again building a shop is a gradual process, someday you will have all the tools you need to build those big projects.
But no matter how many tools you have, it doesn't do you any good if you don't have any experience. So step back and realize that everything you build builds you. In other words, each project, whether big or small, gives you more experience.

We have a simple hourly shop rate. There are specific details about which tools we allow to be used by others and which tools can only be operated by us. But, no matter what tool you need, we can help by either allowing you to directly use the tool or by us operating the proper tool for you.
No project is too big or too small for us to help. For example, we have helped families build their pinewood derby cars and 4-H projects.
